What is a pip?
From our lesson "Pips, Lots and Leverage" (Forex basics, part 2). This part starts at 0:17 of the 2:39 video and plays in a large player.
What is a pip?
A pip is the standard unit for measuring a price move in forex. It lets traders compare moves across pairs without quoting long decimals.
Most pairs: 0.0001
On EUR/USD, a move from 1.1000 to 1.1001 is one pip, the fourth decimal place.
Yen pairs: 0.01
On USD/JPY, a move from 150.00 to 150.01 is one pip, the second decimal place.
Pipettes: a tenth of a pip
Most brokers quote a fifth decimal (or a third on yen pairs). That extra digit is a pipette, 0.1 pip.
Gold works differently
Gold has no single pip definition. This calculator uses $0.10 per pip and 100 oz per lot; see the gold calculator for more.
The pip value formula
- Start with the pip size and the units
Pip value in the quote currency = pip size × units. One standard lot is 100,000 units, so on EUR/USD that is 0.0001 × 100,000 = 10 USD.
- Convert to your account currency
If the quote currency is not your account currency, convert it. On USD/JPY at 150.00: 0.01 × 100,000 = 1,000 JPY, ÷ 150 = about $6.67.
- Cross pairs use the quote currency's rate
On EUR/GBP a pip is 10 GBP per lot. At GBP/USD 1.30 that is about $13.
- Scale by your lot size
Multiply by your lots: 0.1 lots of EUR/USD is $1 a pip, 0.01 lots is $0.10.
Pip value reference table (USD account)
Typical values per standard lot. Pairs not quoted in USD move a little with the exchange rate, so use the calculator for today's figure.
| Pair | Pip size | Standard (1.0) | Mini (0.1) | Micro (0.01) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD, NZD/USD | 0.0001 | $10.00 | $1.00 | $0.10 |
| USD/JPY at 150 | 0.01 | about $6.67 | about $0.67 | about $0.07 |
| USD/CHF at 0.85 | 0.0001 | about $11.76 | about $1.18 | about $0.12 |
| USD/CAD at 1.40 | 0.0001 | about $7.14 | about $0.71 | about $0.07 |
| EUR/GBP with GBP/USD at 1.30 | 0.0001 | about $13.00 | about $1.30 | about $0.13 |
Pip value and risk management
Turn pips into money
A 30-pip stop on 1 lot of EUR/USD risks $300. On 0.1 lots it risks $30. Pip value is what links the two.
Size from the risk, not the other way round
Decide what you will risk first, then use the position size calculator to find the lots.
Compare pairs fairly
A 50-pip move on GBP/JPY and on EUR/USD are not worth the same. Check the value before you compare setups.
Check before every trade
Make the pip value part of a short pre-trade routine with your stop, lot size and the economic calendar.
Common pip value mistakes
Only pairs quoted in USD give a fixed $10 per standard lot; yen and cross pairs differ.
A 5-digit move of 0.00010 is one pip, not ten.
If your account is in EUR or GBP, the value of a pip in your money changes with the exchange rate.
Gold pip definitions vary by broker; always think in dollars of price.
Pip Calculator FAQs
What is a pip in forex?
A pip is the standard unit of price movement: 0.0001 on most pairs and 0.01 on pairs quoted in Japanese yen.
How do I calculate pip value?
Multiply the pip size by the number of units, then convert into your account currency. One standard lot of EUR/USD is 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10 per pip.
What is a pipette in forex?
A pipette is a tenth of a pip: the fifth decimal on most pairs, or the third on yen pairs, shown by brokers that quote fractional prices.
Why does pip value differ between currency pairs?
Because the pip is worth a fixed amount in the quote currency. When the quote currency is not your account currency, its value in your money depends on the exchange rate.
How many pips is a good profit in forex?
There is no fixed number. What matters is the result in money compared with the risk you took, which depends on your lot size and stop, not on pips alone.
What is the difference between a standard lot, mini lot, and micro lot?
A standard lot is 100,000 units, a mini lot 10,000 (0.1) and a micro lot 1,000 (0.01). On EUR/USD a pip is worth $10, $1 and $0.10 respectively.
How does pip value affect risk management?
It converts your stop-loss in pips into money. Knowing the pip value lets you choose a lot size so a stop-out costs no more than you planned to risk.
Does pip value change with the exchange rate?
Yes, whenever the quote currency differs from your account currency, for example USD/JPY or EUR/GBP in a USD account. Pairs quoted in your account currency stay fixed.
