Two things decide whether you can trade: the broker must accept your country, and your own country's law must allow you to trade with a foreign broker. A broker accepting you does not make it legal where you live, so check both.
Your country
No country found
XM's own wording: it does not serve citizens of the United States, Canada, Israel and Iran, "and other sanctioned countries".
What traders get
What to watch
Ten parameters, weighted the same way for every broker. The share shows how much each one counts towards the score; the label is what we found for XM.
A regulator licenses brokers and supervises how they treat clients. Top-tier regulators such as the FCA (UK), ASIC (Australia) and CySEC (EU) set strict rules on client money, leverage and complaints; offshore regulators set lighter ones. Most brokers run several companies, and the one named in your client agreement decides which rules protect you. Negative balance protection means you cannot lose more than the money in your account.
XM is a group of companies. The one that opens your account decides your regulator, your leverage cap and whether a compensation scheme covers you. Pick your region:
XM holds no UK licence. The FCA licence (705428) once held by its parent now belongs to Trading.com Markets, a separate brand. For UK traders we only cover FCA-authorised firms.
See FCA-regulated brokers →XM does not accept residents of the United States or Canada (nor Israel or Iran).
Before you deposit, find the company name in your client agreement and look up its licence on the regulator's own register.
Before you can trade or withdraw, a broker must check who you are. This is called KYC, short for "know your customer". You usually upload a photo ID and a recent bill or bank statement showing your address. Practise on a demo account with virtual money before you deposit real money.
You can hold up to 10 trading accounts plus one Shares account, and up to 5 demo accounts. Demos close after 60 days without use. Residents of the US, Canada, Israel, Iran and other sanctioned countries cannot open an account.
Step-by-step account guide →The spread is the gap between the buy and sell price, and it is the main cost on accounts without commission. A pip is the fourth decimal on most currency pairs (0.0001); on one standard lot of EUR/USD, 1 pip is worth about $10. Raw and ECN accounts have tighter spreads but add a fixed commission per lot, so always compare the total cost.
On Standard and Ultra Low the spread is the whole trading cost. Slide to your usual size and see the difference between the two accounts on EUR/USD.
Uses XM's published "as low as" spreads and $10 per pip per standard lot. Live spreads float and widen around news, rollover and weekends. Swaps are extra on positions held overnight; Wednesday counts three days.
| Cost | What XM charges |
|---|---|
| Commission | None on Standard or Ultra Low; Shares account only |
| Deposits and withdrawals | No XM fee; XM covers bank fees on international wires of $200 or more |
| Dormancy | $10 a month after 90 days with no activity (or the balance, if lower) |
| Overnight swap | Charged or paid daily, triple on Wednesday; selected Ultra Low instruments are swap-free |

One standard lot (100,000 units) opened and closed, using each broker's cheapest published EUR/USD pricing: spread × $10 plus the round-turn commission. "From" spreads are best-case, so live costs at those brokers are usually higher than shown; "average" and "typical" are the brokers' own published averages. Swaps are not included. Sources: each broker's own site, checked between 30 September and 19 October 2026.
A swap is interest you pay or earn when you keep a trade open past the daily rollover, because a currency trade borrows one currency to buy another. Many brokers charge three days on Wednesday to cover the weekend. An Islamic or swap-free account removes this interest, sometimes with a fixed admin fee instead.
| When you pay | On positions held past the daily rollover. Wednesday's swap counts three days to cover the weekend. |
|---|---|
| How it is set | Forex and spot metals: trade size × the tom-next rate, less XM's mark-up. Stocks and indices use the interbank rate instead. |
| No swap | Futures, which are closed at expiry instead of rolled over. |
| Weekend gold | GOLD24-7 on MT5 charges swaps every day, weekends included. |
| Islamic option | Available on every account type. Ultra Low also has selected swap-free instruments. |
| Dividends | Cash indices and stock CFDs are adjusted: credited on buys, debited on sells. |
A standard lot is 100,000 units of currency, a mini lot 10,000 and a micro lot 1,000. A cent account shows your balance in cents, so you can trade very small sizes while you learn. Standard accounts usually cost more in spread; raw accounts cost less in spread but charge commission.
$5
$5
$10,000
Every account has negative balance protection, hedging and an Islamic option. Stop out is 20% on Standard and Ultra Low.
Leverage lets you open a bigger position with less money: at 1:100, $100 controls $10,000. It multiplies losses exactly as much as profits. Margin is the money held to keep a trade open; at the margin call level you are warned, and at the stop out level the broker starts closing your trades. Most beginners are safer with low leverage.
XM Global tiers by account equity. EU clients are capped at 1:30 on major pairs whatever their balance. XM says leverage is not cut around news such as NFP.
MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5) are the most widely used trading platforms; MT5 is newer, with more markets and tools. cTrader and TradingView are popular for their charts. Expert advisors (EAs) are programs that trade automatically on MetaTrader.
Forex, indices, gold and oil. No stock CFDs. Expert advisors run.
Every XM market, including stock CFDs and crypto. 58 indicators.
MT4 or MT5 in the browser, nothing to install.
Open accounts, verify, fund, trade, TradingView charts and alerts.
Scalping, hedging and news trading are allowed on every account. No cTrader.
Most of what brokers offer are CFDs (contracts for difference): you trade the price of gold, an index, a share or a coin without owning it. Spreads differ from market to market and usually widen around big news and when markets open.
| Market | Average spread | Max leverage |
|---|---|---|
| ForexEUR/USD | From 1.6 (Standard) · 0.8 (Ultra Low) | 1:1000 |

Spreads widen around news, at weekends and at the end of sessions. Forex trades from Monday 00:02 to Friday 23:58 server time (GMT+2, GMT+3 in summer); crypto trades all week, holidays included.
XM spreads by market →Market execution fills your order at the best price available, which can be slightly different from the price you clicked; that difference is called slippage. Scalping means holding trades for seconds or minutes. A VPS is a remote computer that keeps your platform and EAs running when your own computer is off.
| Execution | Market execution with no requotes or rejections. Slippage can still happen in fast markets. |
|---|---|
| Speed | XM says 99.7% of orders filled in under 66 ms during NFP, FOMC and CPI releases. This is XM's figure; we have not tested it. |
| Styles allowed | Scalping and news trading on every account. Hedging inside one account, not between accounts. |
| Expert advisors | Run on MT4 and MT5. EAs and trailing stops stop working when your terminal is offline. |
| Around news | XM says it does not cut leverage during releases such as NFP. |
| Limits | Up to 300 open positions and pending orders per account. Standard lots from 0.01 to 50; Micro lots from 0.1 to 100. |

Copy trading automatically copies another trader's positions into your account. Their past results do not guarantee future ones, and you pay them through a profit share or a wider spread. Start with a small amount and keep a stop loss.
| How it works | You open an Investor account (USD, 1:500, one per client) and pick strategies to copy. You cannot place your own trades in it. |
|---|---|
| Amounts | From $50 per strategy (a provider can ask for more), up to $300,000. |
| Risk controls | A fixed copy multiplier from 0.01 to 20. The stop loss is set to your investment amount automatically. |
| What is not copied | Stock CFDs. Crypto copies at a fixed 1:20 margin. There is no demo copy trading. |
| Become a provider | $100 minimum across your XM accounts. Managers earn up to 50% profit share, charged on a high-water mark. |
| Size | XM reports 18,000+ strategies and 700,000+ copy traders. |
To stop money laundering, brokers usually send withdrawals back to the card, bank or wallet you deposited from, and only to an account in your own name. You must be verified to withdraw, and your bank or payment provider can add its own time and fees.
You can't withdraw below a 150% margin level on weekdays or 400% at weekends (GMT+2), so close or reduce trades first.
A deposit bonus is usually trading credit, not cash. It adds margin to your account, but you cannot withdraw it, only the profits you make, and often only after trading a set volume. Read the terms before you accept one.
| Offer | What you get |
|---|---|
| 50% deposit bonus → | Up to $100 on your first deposit, then up to $5,000 in deposit bonuses a month |
| Traders Club → | XM Coins earned on every trade |
| Trading competitions → | Monthly cash prize pools |
| Refer a friend → | A reward for each friend who joins and trades |
| Cashback (ended) → | The September–October 2026 round ended on 20 October |
The deposit bonus is trading credit, not cash: you can withdraw profits made with it, never the bonus. It applies to Standard and Micro accounts only, not Ultra Low or Shares, and EU retail clients cannot receive bonuses. Withdrawals reduce the bonus, and 90 days without activity removes it. Offers change by region.

XM suits beginners and small accounts better than most: $5 to start, spread-only pricing, every account with negative balance protection and an Islamic option, and support that never closes. The catch is the licence. Outside the EU and UAE you join XM Global under the Belize regulator, which offers less protection than CySEC or the DFSA. Active traders should pick Ultra Low; anyone who might stop trading for a few months should plan for the dormancy fee.
We never tell you to trade, so read XM's disclosures first. Our promise
What traders say about XM in their own words. These ratings are separate from FX Recap's own score of 4.75, which comes from our review.
Traded with XM?
About two minutes. We read every review before it is published.UK traders are protected by FCA rules only at FCA-authorised firms. The licences XM lists are CySEC, the DFSA, the FSC and the FSA, none of them in the UK.
Yes. XM is licensed by CySEC (120/10), the DFSA (F003484) and the FSC Belize (8557558), plus the FSC Mauritius and the FSA Seychelles. The protection you get depends on which of those companies opens your account, so read the name on your client agreement.
$5 on Standard, Micro and Ultra Low accounts, and $10,000 on the Shares account. Some payment methods set their own, higher minimum.
Not on Standard or Ultra Low accounts: the spread is the cost. The Shares account, which holds real shares, charges commission.
XM says its back office processes requests instantly. Cards and bank wires then take 2 to 5 business days to reach you. Money goes back to the source you deposited from first.
The usual reasons are XM's own rules: money goes back to the card or e-wallet you deposited from first, your account must stay above a 150% margin level on weekdays (400% at weekends) after the withdrawal, and XM can ask for ID or proof of address before paying out. Once processed, cards and bank wires take 2 to 5 business days.
Up to 1:1000 at XM Global on equity up to $40,000. It drops to 1:500, 1:200 and then 1:100 as equity rises past $200,000. EU retail clients are capped at 1:30 on major pairs.
Yes. After 90 days with no activity, XM takes $10 a month, or the remaining balance if that is smaller. Accounts with a zero balance are not charged.
XM does not accept residents of the United States, Canada, Israel and Iran, and it also excludes sanctioned countries. If your country is not on its list, the sign-up form gives the final answer; the country check on this page shows yours.
