AvaTrade Review 2026

4.5/5 FX Recap score

Facts checked against avatrade.com on

FX Recap Awards 2026: #7 overall · Widest regulation
Visit AvaTradeExcellentLicences: Central Bank of Ireland, ASIC +7

Ad High risk: most retail CFD accounts lose money. We never tell you to trade, so read AvaTrade's disclosures first. Our promise

AvaTrade holds one of the widest sets of licences in retail forex, from the Central Bank of Ireland and ASIC to Japan's FSA, and adds tools few brokers have: AvaProtect trade insurance, AvaOptions and three copy trading services. Costs sit in the spread, but a $50 inactivity fee after three months makes it a poor home for idle money.

Can I open an AvaTrade account from my country?

Is it legal for me to trade with this broker?

Two things decide whether you can trade: the broker must accept your country, and your own country's law must allow you to trade with a foreign broker. A broker accepting you does not make it legal where you live, so check both.

Is AvaTrade safe? It depends on where you live

What does a regulator actually do?

A regulator licenses brokers and supervises how they treat clients. Top-tier regulators such as the FCA (UK), ASIC (Australia) and CySEC (EU) set strict rules on client money, leverage and complaints; offshore regulators set lighter ones. Most brokers run several companies, and the one named in your client agreement decides which rules protect you. Negative balance protection means you cannot lose more than the money in your account.

AvaTrade has companies in nine jurisdictions. The one that opens your account depends on where you live, and that sets your leverage and any compensation cover. Pick your region:

Company
Ava Trade Markets Ltd
Regulator
FSC (British Virgin Islands)
Licence
SIBA/L/13/1049
Leverage
Up to 1:400 on forex
  • Negative balance protection: losses beyond your funds are refunded
  • EU residents held here can ask to move to the Irish company for EU protections

AvaTrade also holds licences from the Israel Securities Authority (ATrade Ltd), CySEC (347/17, for DupliTrade) and the CMA Kenya (262, non-dealing), and has an SFC-authorised representative office in Colombia. AvaTrade is a market maker: its dealing desk is your counterparty.

How to open an AvaTrade account

1 Photo ID passport or ID card 2 Proof of address bill or bank statement Verified deposit and trade Called KYC (know your customer): needed before you can withdraw
What is KYC verification?

Before you can trade or withdraw, a broker must check who you are. This is called KYC, short for "know your customer". You usually upload a photo ID and a recent bill or bank statement showing your address. Practise on a demo account with virtual money before you deposit real money.

  1. RegisterSign up with an email and password, then complete the registration form. A tax ID (TIN) is required.
  2. VerifyUpload a colour copy of your passport, ID or licence and proof of address from the last 6 months. AvaTrade reviews them within 1 business day.
  3. FundDeposit at least 100 in your base currency. Verify within 14 days of your first deposit, or the account may be blocked. EU clients verify before depositing.
  4. TradeAdd accounts on different platforms from the same registration. Your base currency cannot be changed later.

Australian clients answer an extra questionnaire. The demo account comes with 10,000 in virtual funds for 60 days, extendable through support.

AvaTrade fees: what one trade costs

What are spreads and pips?

The spread is the gap between the buy and sell price, and it is the main cost on accounts without commission. A pip is the fourth decimal on most currency pairs (0.0001); on one standard lot of EUR/USD, 1 pip is worth about $10. Raw and ECN accounts have tighter spreads but add a fixed commission per lot, so always compare the total cost.

AvaTrade charges no commission: its fee is the spread over the market price. The costs to plan for are overnight fees and the inactivity fees.

One standard lot (100,000 units) opened and closed, using each broker's cheapest published EUR/USD pricing: spread × $10 plus the round-turn commission. "From" spreads are best-case, so live costs at those brokers are usually higher than shown; "average" and "typical" are the brokers' own published averages. Swaps are not included. AvaTrade swaps and the Islamic account

Mon swap × 1 Tue swap × 1 Wed swap × 3 Thu swap × 1 Fri swap × 1 Each night your trade stays open past rollover, you pay or earn a swap Wednesday covers Saturday and Sunday · swap-free accounts remove this interest
What is a swap fee?

A swap is interest you pay or earn when you keep a trade open past the daily rollover, because a currency trade borrows one currency to buy another. Many brokers charge three days on Wednesday to cover the weekend. An Islamic or swap-free account removes this interest, sometimes with a fixed admin fee instead.

What is a lot, and what is a cent account?

A standard lot is 100,000 units of currency, a mini lot 10,000 and a micro lot 1,000. A cent account shows your balance in cents, so you can trade very small sizes while you learn. Standard accounts usually cost more in spread; raw accounts cost less in spread but charge commission.

Your money $100 1:100 Position you control $10,000 Stop out trades closed Margin call warning Healthy margin →
How do leverage, margin call and stop out work?

Leverage lets you open a bigger position with less money: at 1:100, $100 controls $10,000. It multiplies losses exactly as much as profits. Margin is the money held to keep a trade open; at the margin call level you are warned, and at the stop out level the broker starts closing your trades. Most beginners are safer with low leverage.

Why does my money go back to the same card or wallet?

Our verdict on AvaTrade

AvaTrade is one of the best-regulated brokers we review, with licences in Ireland, Australia, Japan, South Africa, Abu Dhabi and Israel, and tools you rarely find elsewhere: AvaProtect, AvaOptions and three copy trading services. It charges no commission. The catch is cost for quiet accounts: $50 after three months without trading and $100 after a year, so it suits active traders far better than occasional ones. International clients join the BVI company, so check which one opens your account.

We never tell you to trade, so read AvaTrade's disclosures first. Our promise

AvaTrade questions traders ask

Is AvaTrade regulated?

Yes, widely. Its companies are licensed by the Central Bank of Ireland (C53877), ASIC (406684), Japan's FSA (1662), the FSCA (45984), the ADGM FSRA (190018), the Israel Securities Authority and the BVI FSC, among others. International clients join the BVI company.

What is the AvaTrade minimum deposit?

100 in your base currency by card, wire or e-wallet. AvaTrade suggests 1,000–2,000 to use its full product range.

Does AvaTrade charge an inactivity fee?

Yes: 50 (USD, EUR or GBP) after 3 consecutive months without use, repeated every 3 months, plus a 100 administration fee after 12 months.

How long do AvaTrade withdrawals take?

AvaTrade processes requests within 1 business day once you are verified. E-wallets then take up to 1 day, cards up to 5 business days and wires up to 10.

Why can an AvaTrade withdrawal be delayed?

Before paying, AvaTrade checks that you are fully verified, that any bonus trading volume is met, that you have enough usable margin and that the money goes back to the right method (card deposits are refunded to the card first). Requests are processed within 1 business day; wires then take up to 10 business days.

What is AvaProtect?

Paid cover on FX, gold and silver trades in WebTrader and the app. If the trade loses, AvaTrade reimburses the loss up to $1 million when the protection expires. The premium depends on expected volatility.

Does AvaTrade accept UK clients?

No. The UK, the US, India and New Zealand are all on AvaTrade's restricted list.

Can I open an AvaTrade account from my country?

AvaTrade does not accept residents of the United States, the United Kingdom, India, New Zealand, Russia, Belgium, Cuba, Iran and some other countries it lists. If your country is not on its list, the sign-up form gives the final answer; the country check on this page shows yours.
