Gold's busy hours fall in the South African afternoon.

The best time to trade gold from South Africa is usually the London and New York overlap: about 15:00 to 19:00 SAST from November to mid-March, and 14:00 to 18:00 SAST from late March to October. That window has the most liquidity, the tightest spreads on XAU/USD and the biggest scheduled events, including US economic data at 15:30 SAST (14:30 in the northern summer). The quietest and most expensive time is around midnight SAST, when gold's reference market takes its daily break.

South African Standard Time does not change with the seasons, but London and New York do. That is why every gold time on this page has a summer and a winter version. The northern-hemisphere "winter" in this guide runs from early November to mid-March; "summer" from late March to late October.

Gold's trading day in SAST

Gold trades almost around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday night New York time. CME Group's gold futures, the reference market, run from Sunday 18:00 to Friday 17:00 New York time with a one-hour break each day, and most brokers' XAU/USD CFDs follow a very similar schedule. The chart shows a typical weekday in the southern summer, when London and New York are on standard time.

How gold behaves in each session

  • Asia (about 02:00 to 11:00 SAST): trading is lighter for most of these hours. Gold often moves in a narrower range, though it can react to Chinese data or overnight news. Spreads are usually a little wider than in the afternoon.
  • London (about 10:00 to 19:00 SAST): London is the centre of the global over-the-counter gold market, and the LBMA Gold Price auctions are held twice a day. Volume picks up sharply from the London open, and trends that start here often run into the afternoon.
  • New York (about 15:00 to 00:00 SAST): US futures trading, US data and Fed decisions dominate. The first two hours of the overlap are usually the most active of the whole day; activity fades after the London close at about 19:00 SAST.

These are general patterns, not rules. A surprise headline can make any hour busy, and a holiday can make a normally busy hour quiet.

For a few weeks in March and in late October to early November, the UK and the US change their clocks on different dates, so some of these times shift by an hour for that period only. Your broker's platform shows session times in its server time; open the XAUUSD Specification window to see them.

Check the calendar before every gold trade; these are the times spreads jump.

US jobs and inflation figures often move gold by more in a minute than in the rest of the day. Spreads widen just before the release and can stay wide for several minutes after it. Many traders either stay out for the first few minutes or trade the reaction once spreads settle. Our forex news page lists the day's events.

Times to avoid

  • Around midnight SAST: the daily break and the first hour after it bring the widest spreads of the day. Our guide to why gold spreads widen at the daily open explains why.
  • The minute before US data: spreads jump and stops can fill with slippage.
  • Late Friday night: liquidity fades before the weekend, and Monday can open with a gap.
  • US public holidays: the reference market may close early; check the holiday calendar.

Gold and the rand

South Africa is a gold producer, and the rand often moves with metal prices and global risk appetite. If you trade gold priced in dollars from a rand-funded account, your result in rand depends on both the gold move and USD/ZAR. A gold gain can be partly offset if the rand strengthens at the same time. Our guide to what moves the rand covers the link.

Illustrative case, not a real client

Naledi works until 16:30 in Johannesburg. She used to trade gold late at night and kept getting stopped out by spread spikes after midnight. She moved her trading to 17:00 to 20:00 SAST, checked the calendar for US data and Fed days, and stayed flat for ten minutes around each release. Her number of trades fell by a third and her average cost per trade fell with it.

Size gold trades carefully: gold moves in dollars per ounce, and a 0.01 lot is usually one ounce. Our gold lot size calculator and XAU/USD pip value guide show the numbers.

Gold CFDs are leveraged and can move very fast around news. Trading carries a high risk of losing money. This guide is education, not financial advice.
